About Me

What’s your role? I consider my most important role is to act as, in effect, an out-sourced in-house employment lawyer. I think it’s incredibly important to get to know my clients’ business as well as I can so that the transition from internal HR advice to external legal advice is as seamless as possible. All companies have a unique identity and approach and it’s important that the advice I give to them is specific to their needs and desired outcomes, rather than generic advice on “the law”. The work that I do for companies covers the employment relationship from start to finish, from avoiding discrimination in recruitment to preparing contracts of employment, addressing work place issues such as grievances, performance issues, sickness absence management (both long and short term) and conduct issues, through to ensuring any dismissals are carried out in such a way as to minimise the company’s risk of litigation. In addition, I support companies through significant changes such as mergers and acquisitions, outsourcing and large scale redundancy programmes. Despite the changes introduced by the Government, such as fees and compulsory mediation, it is still the case that Employment Tribunals remain a fact of doing business. I help companies successfully deal with Employment Tribunal claims, always focussing on the outcome that best meets the company’s preferred approach, whether that’s negotiating a commercial settlement or fighting the claim all the way to the Hearing. What are your specialisms? Although I am a generalist Employment Lawyer, which means I am experienced in all aspects of employment law, within that my specialisms include: Employment Tribunal litigation: predominantly acting for employers to defend claims, including drafting all relevant paperwork, negotiating settlements and carrying out advocacy in the Employment Tribunal. Equality & Diversity: advising HR professionals and managers on avoiding discrimination in the workplace and addressing allegations of discrimination when they arise, including providing training for managers on spotting potential problems before they arise and dealing with them once they do. Employment Law Training: providing practical and pragmatic advice to HR advisers and managers on recognising potential employment law issues in the workplace and addressing those issues when they arise. Data Protection: advising companies on their obligations in relation to Data Protection, particularly with regard to their employees, including issues relating to surveillance in and outside of the workplace, employees’ medical records and dealing with subject access requests. Your experience? Over the years I have acted for all types of employers, from PLCs and multi-nationals to SMEs, in locations from Cornwall to Manchester. I have experience within the manufacturing, retail, leisure, education and healthcare sectors and particular experience in acting for clients in the media industry, including regional and national newspapers and magazines, as well as New Media. I have appeared in Employment Tribunals across the country and have appeared on BBC South, BBC South Today, BBC Radio Solent and Wave FM as an expert in Employment law.
