The opening up of transport data to help develop and enhance the city is an idea that should be applauded and followed.
Bristol council's move to provide information gathered in its course of business adds benefit to everybody involved. It's an opportunity for the council to tap into new revenue streams and also allows for new businesses to take advantage of the data, growing the economy as a result.
Other councils should take heed of Bristol's example and move to make their own data available for commercial use.
Bristol City Council has launched an application programme interface (API) to provide free and easy access to transport data from across the city, in support of new and innovative technology projects.
